Notes for IDA AUGUSTA WALLING:

Some rambling notes of her childhood by Ida Augusta Walling in 1967:

When we still lived in Iowa, Mama sent Lizzie and Clara to get some wood. I wanted to go too, so she put my coat on me and let me go. We had to go up hill and there was quite a bit of snow on the ground. I fell with my hands in the snow and froze them. So Lizzie called Mama and she came and picked me up. They took a pan full of snow in the house and made me hold my hands in it.

Our house in Iowa was built partly into the hill; so we could go up the hill and crawl on the roof. We had a nice house in Iowa. When we got to Texas and saw the house, we thought it was the barn and asked Papa where the house was. When he said that was the house we told him that we wanted to go home.

Lizzie and Clara went to school in Iowa. On the last day, Mama let me go along. The teacher gave all the pupils a apretty picture and when she did not give me one, I cried. So Lizzie told the teacher that I wanted one too. She said that she had one more and gave it to me. The pictures were about four by six, Lizzie had a picture of a big red rose, Clara a pink one, and mine was eyellow. Mama made a big scrap book when she got a hold of colored pictures. She would cut them out and put them in the scrap book. She put our rose pictures in the scrapbook. Colored pictures were scarce and it was a rare treat when we childdren could look at the book.

When we were in Texas and the new school house was built, it was on the bare prairie. Cattle would be all around it. One morning the cattle had broken a window --- I guess with their horns. The school board decided to fence the school ground. The men set the posts and itw was some time before they put on the wires. Then one Saturday they put one barb wire aroujnd the fence. The children were so used to running around the posts and they did not notice the wire. Lizzie ran into it and cut her lip real bad. The teacher sent some of the boys to a neighbor who came and took Lizzie and Clara home. Papa had to hitch up his tream and drive to Wharton to the doctor. After the accident, Lizzie could not go to school and it was several miles to walk throughn the pasture. They did not want to send Clara alone so I was started to school. I would get so tired walking so far so Clara always held my hand and pulled me along when I got tired. Lizzie and Clara had taught me to read some. The teacher was surprised that I could read. She put me in the class with the best and did not have to start me with the A B C's. Going to school we had to go through a pasture with a lot of cattle. We would get scared and run and then hide in the big grass.

When we got to Texas, wood was the only fuel to cook and heat with. We had a large timber area. After we girls were older, one of us had to go with Papa to get wood -- to pull one end of the cross cut saw to cut up the trees so that they could be loaded. One day when it was my turn to go, Papa drove over a rotten log that had a bumble bee nest in it. thye bumble bees came out in swarms and stung the horses. One stung me on the head and one on the hand. The next morning my eyes were swollen shut and my hand was swelled real big.

There were also many native pecan trees and we would go with Mama to gather pecans. Sometimes we had all we could carry home. Papa would take the pecans to market and buy coffee, sugar, etc. with them.

Notes for ROSINA 'ROSIE' FREDERICKA WALLING:

Rosie puts down some memories for a Family Reunion in 1967:

Just after sundown Mama would call for all the little ones to come in tghe house. Then the older ones had to help in the kitchen and dining room, but Fred, age two, Tillie, age three and one half, and I , age five, would go into the dining room and sit in the big rockers and rock. Then Mama would light the oil lamp on the dining room table and we would watch the evening shadows and rock and sing about everything -- the sun, the moon, the stars, flowers, birds, and just everything (how different from our evenings with TV and movies today).

Tillie told me about the twelve silver plates that Grandmother Osthoff's family had brought over from Bavaria. The plates had the Hammerand Family Crest under each plate. Mama and her sister Kate and brother John each got four plates. Mama never used them and I don't know where she kept them, but I remember she showed them to us once. The plates burned up when our house burned and I suppose no one ever thoughnt of them any more, but I guess Mama must have or she wouldn't have told Tillie about them.

During the epidemic of yellow fever when the men were guarding the rivere to keep the travelers from the city from crossing, Papa would take his shotgun and go down to the river each night. Tillie who was just beginning to talk, was so afraid and she would say, "The Riverlers are going to get Daddy!" If ciyrse sge neabt tge travelers.
